Turning
gray into color the
rain into sun
The story of YMCA begins in 1844 in industrial London, gray and rainy, when George Williams, together with eleven other young Englishmen, decided to turn gray into color and rain into sun. The protection of the individual and his rights from that moment on they became the centerpiece of YMCA ’s work to create a better life for
all.
A little over ten years passed when, in 1855, the first secretary of YMCA, as well as founder of the Red Cross, Henri Dunant made
the internationalization of the association a reality. The “Base of Paris ” was born under the biblical motto “To ensure that everyone is one, with two specific goals to be achieved: to work for unity and to work for the extension of the Kingdom
of God on earth, through the principles of justice, peace and love that Jesus Christ transmitted to the world. Since its foundation, YMCA has made it possible to create summer camps for playful, but also the establishment of programs for prisoners of the two
world wars that shook the twentieth century, which earned the association the Nobel Peace Prize in 1944. To date, YMCA is present in over 119 countries and unites more than 58 million people under one great flag: that of peace.
